History of  colours - Physics 

The great Physicist Sir Isaac Newton discovered that when pure light passes through a prism it separates into all of the visible colours. Newton also found that each colour is made up of a single wavelength and cannot be separated any further into other colours. He also discovered that all colours are pieces of white light, the colour of all natural bodies have no other origin than this, that they are variously qualified to reflect one sort of light in greater plenty then another.


History of colour - Perception

  • There was much debate in the 19th century about visual perception.
  • Some believed that human perceive only 3 primary colours : Red, Blue, Yellow.
  • Some propogated a system of colour opponency in which there are primary colours in 3 pair: black/white, yellow/blue, red/green... what your eye records is each difference between each pair of colours, and combines then to process one unique colour.

History of colour psychology 

Remember that these are general ideas for American culture. Meaning differ in other parts of the world, keep that in mind for web especially.

Black: Sophistication, death, evil, power, success ....is the black 
white: Purity, innocence, futuristic stuff, hygiene
Brown: Stable, organic 
Red: Energy, life, blood, war, fire culturally it tells us to stop and look. Can also symbolize richness and wealth, especially in darker tones.
Blue: Can be restful or uneasy depending on the shade. Associated with loyalty and dependability, a very common corporate colour and a very safe colour for most anything. 
Green: Peace, nature, money, luck, fertility, generosity.
Yellow: Creativity, happiness, warmth, (in small amounts, too much yellow is stressful)
Orange: Very outgoing, fast-paced, fun colour. Often used in fast food it make people eat fast and move fast.
Purple: Dark shades imply wealth and royalty, lighter shades imply youth and fantasy.

Colour psychology is the field of study devoted to analyzing the effect of colour on human behaviour and fortunate. Study of the psychology of colour is complicated by the different symbolic meanings of the colour in different culture,
